IRISH COFFEE: To Mix or not to mix?
I have to admit (somewhat shamelessly) that I do not like coffee. I don’t like regular coffee, decaf, espresso, ice cream that tastes like coffee, coffee flavored candy, …
You get my point. I do like how it smells, but the taste, ugh!
I remember when my mother tried to get me into drinking “cafe con leche” in the mornings, just to wake me up. I would spend what seemed like hours staring into that cup of coffee, dreading to take a sip, until I had to run to catch the school bus, leaving the full glass behind.
But I’m ready to give it another try, and what better way than with a delicious glass of Irish coffee! At least, if the coffee doesn’t do it for me, I’m sure the alcohol will!
I’ve been doing my due diligence research on the internet for the best Irish coffee recipes and have noticed there are two distinct differences between the ones I’ve found in Spanish sites compared to the English ones: To mix or not to mix?
Wikipedia gives the following definition and ingredients: "Irish coffee is a cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar, stirred, and topped with thick cream. The coffee is drunk through the cream. The original recipe explicitly uses cream that has not been whipped, although drinks made with whipped cream are often sold as “Irish coffee”.
The method described mixes the coffee and whiskey together, and then the cream is poured on top. Most of the English recipes do mix the coffee and whiskey, but it seems that in Spain, these two ingredients are kept in layers.
So I’m asking you, the Irish, the experts, should I mix the ingredients or not? SHARE WITH US your best recipes! I can’t promise to try them all, but I will let you know the ones I do!
I want to share with you my father’s recipe. I never tasted his Irish coffee but our friends always said it was delicious! This is exactly how he explained it to me, so there are no measurement… Use your good Irish judgement!
Freshly brewed hot coffee (superior coffee!)
Pour Irish whiskey in a metal container with the adequate amount of brown sugar to sweeten it.
Make a good tasting coffee. The amount necessary to satisfy those who will enjoy this Irish coffee we will make (usually a little more coffee than the amount of whiskey put into the metal container).
Heat the metal container with its contents. Then, flambé the content for a few seconds.
Pour the sweetened and flambéed whiskey in a coffee jug, the hotter it is, the better.
Distribute the mixture into the mugs to be used.
Carefully pour a sufficient amount of heavy cream into the mugs, aided with a teaspoon so as to not mix with coffee/whiskey, enough to form a thick white layer above.
As a decorative option, you can sprinkle some cinnamon on top to give it an exotic flavor.
Wait for your guests to express their satisfaction with the excellent Irish coffee that has been served them!
